In knowing ourselves we discover that we have already been fully seen, known, and loved by God. We participate in God’s knowing – we are invited to see ourselves with God’s eyes as “marvelously made” and as one of God’s wonderful works. Who we are is who God has created us to be.

I’d always read Jesus’ parable

of the treasure in the field

assuming I was the man.

I find the treasure--God’s kingdom--

and give everything I have to possess it.

But what if I got the casting wrong?

In the parables surrounding this one,

Jesus kept casting God as the protagonist--

the one searching, seeking, finding, rescuing...

What if Jesus was speaking of God

as the man in this parable too?

Then the story is saying something I’d never heard before:

that the Kingdom of God is like a man--God--

who finds a treasure...

...abandoned, forgotten, buried in the dirt and weeds

in something like an unmarked grave.

And what if

(could it be true?)

I am that treasure?

And upon finding me,

he is so overjoyed and eager to have me for himself

that ‘for the joy set before him,’

God gave everything he had--

his very Son, Jesus Christ--

to make me his.

He bought the whole field of my life--

rocks, weeds, and all--

to raise me from the dirt,

wash me clean,

and claim me as his own.
